Midsummer Day Party with Kukerpillid

Estonians celebrate “Jaaniõhtu” on the eve of the Summer Solstice with bonfires. Estonians all around the country will gather with their families, or at larger events to celebrate this important day with singing and dancing, as Estonians have done for centuries. The celebrations that accompany Jaaniõhtu carry on usually through the night, they are the largest and most important of the year.

Midsummer day simply refer to the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, but more often refers to specific European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice, or that take place on a day between June 21 and June 24, and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures. Midsummer is especially important in the cultures of Scandinavia and Estonia where it is the most celebrated holiday apart from Christmas.

Vihula Manor celebrates Midsummer Day with singing and dancing together with Kukerpillid.

Jäääär (“edge of the ice”) was born on the 21st of January, 1991 in Tartu, and is noteworthy in the Estonian musical landscape not only because of its unique name. In reaction to the electronic musical tastelessness of the 80s, a group of young musicians came together to create something unique to touch their and their listeners’ souls. The resulting “urban folk”, performed on acoustic instruments, with deep and often penetrating lyrics, was an enchantingly refreshing new musical blend

Incidentally, Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven”, released the next year, had a very similar soundscape to that of Jäääär. The four members of Jäääär came from widely varying musical backgrounds, ranging from country to progressive rock. In the first years of their creative collaboration, they lived, worked and breathed together and besides enjoying life wrote a large number of songs, many of which have become local classics. Outside of Estonia, Jäääär has performed for audiences in Finland, Austria, Latvia and even Japan. To date, the band has been active for almost 20 years.

My name is Luisa Värk and I was born in a piny small town of Elva, South Estonia in a cold February day in 1987. During my teenage years in Elva High School (initially Elva Elementary School) I attended Elva Hobby School for singing classes, Elva Children’s Music School for piano lessons and tried dance sport competitions and modern dance simultaneously.. When it comes to singing, I consider Heidy Tamme, who instructed me for the period of more than seven years, the best, the most significant and influential teacher. Besides Heidy Tamme I have studied singing under the guidance of well-known Estonian music professors such as Kare Kauks, Mare Väljataga, Piret and Tõnu Laikre, and Maiken.

Indigolapsed (Indigochildren)

Indigolapsed (Indigochildren) is pop-folk-jazz group who is known for cozy concerts where the musical enounter feels more like having a jam night at friends place (only with 200-300 people). Beautiful, inspirational and funny songs are mixed by wonderful and real stories about how these songs were created and strange jokes from cello player Joosep Kõrvits. Strangely enough Indigolapsed attracts people from small children to grandpas and as long as we know their concerts are full crowded. Created by the world traveller, songwriter and manager Tom Valsberg, most songs speak about wonderful breaktrhoughs in life, positive attitude, mysterious places in the world but lyrics also point out the holes in capitalism, nonsense of consuming and make fun about people who easily take loans from banks. Indigolapsed does not go into specific style but their music can be described as folkish jazz which is also very enjoyable even if you do not understand estonian.

“Though I did not understand a word they sang, the concert was amazingly sincere and powerful. Still humming inside me” Paul from Norway.
“Cute is the word that describes Indigolapsed, makes you feel warm inside” Mari Rebane, Eesti Päevaleht newspaper.
They have won several prizes: best CD design 2008, best webpage in Estonia 2007 http://www.flightbasic.com/indigolapsed/

Go back to these beautiful times, since Christmas memories stay with the little ones till they are all grown up. Spend time with your children, sing with them, draw with them, smile with them, as we did!
